Why

Pear is a soft, juicy and hydrating treat that most budgies enjoy, offering a little fibre, vitamin C and vitamin K. Like apple, the concern is the seeds, as pear pips contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when crushed, so every seed must be removed for such a small bird. The flesh and washed skin are both safe. Its gentle sweetness makes it a good, easy fruit to start with.

How to feed it

Wash the pear well, cut a thin slice and carefully remove the core and every seed. Leave the skin on if you like, as it adds fibre, or peel it. Clip the slice to the bars or offer small pieces in a dish, and remove leftovers within a couple of hours.

How much & how often

A couple of small pieces two or three times a week is a good amount. Pear is sugary, so keep it as an occasional treat rather than part of the daily food bowl.
