Can Budgies Eat Grapes?

Yes — budgies adore grapes, but they're very sugary and often heavily sprayed, so keep them to a treat.

Why

Grapes are a favourite treat because they are sweet and juicy, and they offer a little vitamin C, vitamin K and antioxidants. The catch is that they are very high in natural sugar and are among the most heavily sprayed fruits, so thorough washing matters. A whole grape is also a choking and slipping hazard for a small bird, so it must always be cut before serving.

How to feed it

Wash the grape very well, or choose organic, then cut it in half or into quarters so your budgie can reach the flesh and cannot choke. Seedless grapes are easiest. Offer the pieces cut-side up in a dish, and remove leftovers before they ferment.

How much & how often

Half a grape, or a couple of small quarters, once or twice a week is a sensible limit. Grapes are very sugary, so treat them as a rare indulgence rather than a regular part of the diet.

⚕️ Please note: This is general information for budgie owners, not veterinary advice. When in doubt, leave a food out and ask a qualified avian vet. If your budgie has eaten something toxic, contact an avian vet immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to peel grapes for budgies?

You do not have to peel them, but the skin holds most of the pesticide residue, so wash grapes thoroughly or buy organic. Some owners peel them to be extra cautious with such a small bird.

Are grape seeds dangerous for budgies?

Grape seeds are not toxic like apple pips, but they are a choking risk and awkward for a tiny beak. Seedless grapes are the simplest choice, or cut the grape open and remove any seeds.

Can budgies eat raisins or dried grapes?

In tiny amounts occasionally, plain unsweetened raisins are fine, but drying concentrates the sugar considerably. Offer no more than a small piece rarely, and avoid any coated in oil or extra sugar.
