Budgies do best on a varied diet: a quality seed or pellet base, plus fresh vegetables every day and small amounts of fruit as treats. Some everyday human foods, though, are genuinely dangerous to them. Search any food above before you offer it — each item is colour-coded with a short reason, and the highlighted foods link to a full feeding guide.
• Wash everything to remove pesticides. • Remove all fruit pits and apple seeds — they contain cyanide. • No avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion or garlic — ever. • Introduce new foods in tiny amounts and remove fresh food after a few hours so it can't spoil.
Leafy greens and vegetables such as kale, broccoli, carrot, bell pepper, cucumber and dandelion greens are excellent daily fresh foods, alongside their seed or pellet base. Fruit should be a smaller, occasional treat because of its sugar.
Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, chives, leek, rhubarb, salt, and all fruit pits and apple seeds are dangerous and should never be given. Even small amounts of avocado or chocolate can be fatal.
Yes, in moderation. Apple (no seeds), banana, berries, melon, mango and grapes are all fine as small treats a couple of times a week. Too much fruit sugar can upset digestion and lead to weight gain.
Offer a small amount of chopped vegetables daily and remove anything uneaten after a few hours. Budgies are small, so a teaspoon or two of chopped fresh food is plenty.
