Can Budgies Eat Apple?

Yes — apple is a safe and popular treat for budgies, as long as you remove every seed first.

Why

Apple is a safe, hydrating treat that most budgies love, and it offers a little vitamin C and fibre. The one real danger is the seeds, which contain amygdalin that releases cyanide when crushed; because a budgie is so tiny, every seed must be removed. The flesh and skin are both fine once washed, making apple one of the easiest fruits to introduce to a nervous or first-time fresh-food eater.

How to feed it

Wash the apple well, as they are often heavily sprayed, then cut a thin slice and carefully cut out the core and every seed. Leave the skin on if you like. Clip the slice to the cage bars or offer small pieces in a shallow dish, and remove any uneaten fruit within a couple of hours.

How much & how often

A couple of small pieces two or three times a week is plenty. Apple is sugary, so keep it as an occasional snack rather than part of the daily vegetable bowl.

⚕️ Please note: This is general information for budgie owners, not veterinary advice. When in doubt, leave a food out and ask a qualified avian vet. If your budgie has eaten something toxic, contact an avian vet immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can budgies eat apple skin?

Yes, washed apple skin is safe and adds a little extra fibre. Wash it well first, since apples are commonly sprayed, or choose organic.

Are apple seeds poisonous to budgies?

Yes. Apple pips contain amygdalin, which turns into cyanide when crushed. For a bird as small as a budgie even a few can be harmful, so remove every seed before offering apple.

How often can a budgie have apple?

Two or three small servings a week is sensible. Apple is high in natural sugar, so it belongs in the occasional-treat category rather than as a daily food.
