Why

Blueberries are one of the more nutritious fruit treats, rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and vitamin K, and their small round shape makes them easy to serve to a tiny bird. They are still sugary, so they remain a moderation food, but the antioxidant content is a genuine plus. Many budgies enjoy rolling and squashing them, which adds a little foraging fun to the bowl.

How to feed it

Wash the blueberries, then cut each one in half or squash it slightly so your budgie can get at the soft inside rather than just rolling a whole berry around. Offer one or two halves in a dish and clear away any uneaten fruit after a couple of hours.

How much & how often

One or two blueberries, halved, two or three times a week is a good amount. They are sweet, so keep them as an occasional treat alongside your budgie's main vegetables and pellets or seed.

⚕️ Please note: This is general information for budgie owners, not veterinary advice. When in doubt, leave a food out and ask a qualified avian vet. If your budgie has eaten something toxic, contact an avian vet immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can budgies eat the skin of a blueberry?

Yes, the whole blueberry including the skin is safe once washed. The skin actually holds much of the antioxidant content, so there is no need to peel these small berries.

Do blueberries stain a budgie's feathers?

They can leave a temporary blue or purple tinge on pale feathers and around the beak, but it is harmless and fades. Serving them halved in a dish helps limit the mess.

Are frozen blueberries okay for budgies?

Thawed frozen blueberries are fine and can be softer and easier to squash. Let them come to room temperature and drain off excess liquid first, as very cold food is not ideal for a small bird.
