The short answer

No — onion is toxic to budgies.

Why

Onion, and the whole allium family (garlic, chives, leeks), contains compounds that damage a bird's red blood cells and can cause anaemia. This applies raw, cooked, powdered or hidden in sauces.

What to do

Keep onion — and the many savoury dishes cooked with it — well away from your budgie.

⚕️ Please note: This is general information for budgie owners, not veterinary advice. When in doubt, leave a food out and ask a qualified avian vet. If your budgie has eaten something toxic, contact an avian vet immediately.
