Parrots range from tiny budgies to huge macaws, and there are more than 350 species worldwide. Here is a friendly look at the most popular types kept as pets and seen in the wild.
Small parrots
The smallest and most popular parrots include budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds and parrotlets. Budgies and cockatiels are gentle, affordable and easy to tame, which makes them favourite first birds. Lovebirds are bold and colourful, while parrotlets pack a big personality into a tiny body. These birds need daily company and space to fly. Medium parrots
Medium parrots such as conures, African greys and Amazons offer bright colours and clever minds. Conures are playful and loud, so they suit lively homes. African greys are among the most intelligent birds and can learn large vocabularies, though they need plenty of mental stimulation. Amazon parrots are outgoing and known for their singing. All of these birds can live for decades, so they are a long-term commitment.
Large parrots
The largest parrots include macaws and cockatoos. Macaws are famous for their vivid feathers, powerful beaks and impressive size, with some species reaching a metre from head to tail. Cockatoos are affectionate and highly social, sporting a distinctive crest they raise when excited. Both need large spaces, sturdy toys and a great deal of attention. Because they can live 50 years or more, they are best suited to experienced, dedicated owners.
