Why

Yoghurt should be limited to the tiniest occasional lick, because like all dairy it contains lactose, and budgies lack the enzyme lactase needed to digest it properly. Plain, unsweetened natural yoghurt is the only kind worth considering, and even then only in a trace amount. Flavoured, sweetened or fruit yoghurts are unsuitable owing to their sugar and additives. There is no real dietary need for yoghurt in a budgie's diet, so while a small taste is unlikely to harm, many owners sensibly skip it altogether.

How to feed it

If you offer any, use only plain, natural, unsweetened yoghurt and let your budgie take the smallest lick from the tip of a clean spoon or your finger. Never choose flavoured, fruit or sweetened varieties. Do not mix it into other foods, and wipe away any residue quickly so it cannot spoil or stick to feathers.

How much & how often

No more than a tiny lick, the amount that clings to a fingertip, and only every week or two at most. Because dairy is poorly digested, keeping it minimal or leaving it out entirely is perfectly reasonable.

Frequently asked questions

Can budgies have flavoured yoghurt?

No. Flavoured and fruit yoghurts are loaded with sugar and additives that are not suitable for a small bird. If you offer yoghurt at all, use only plain, natural, unsweetened yoghurt in a trace amount.

Is yoghurt easier to digest than milk?

Slightly, as some of the lactose is broken down during fermentation, but budgies still lack lactase and process dairy poorly. This is why only the tiniest lick of plain yoghurt is advised, if any at all.

Does my budgie need yoghurt for calcium?

No. Budgies get calcium far more safely from a cuttlebone, a mineral block or a little crushed cooked eggshell. There is no need to rely on dairy, which they struggle to digest.
