Why

Peas are a safe and much-loved vegetable for budgies, offering good plant protein, fibre, vitamin K, vitamin A and B vitamins in a neat little package that is perfectly sized for a small beak. Their popularity makes them handy for tempting reluctant birds onto fresh food. Fresh garden peas or thawed frozen peas both work well, and they can be served raw or lightly cooked. Peas are one of the easiest and most reliable vegetables to get budgies eating regularly.

How to feed it

Use fresh peas or frozen peas thawed to room temperature, never hot from cooking. Offer them raw or very lightly steamed and cooled, plain with no salt. Some budgies prefer them squashed slightly so the soft inside is exposed. Add a few to the veg dish, and remove any uneaten peas after a few hours as they spoil once soft.

How much & how often

A small teaspoon of peas, roughly a few individual peas, several times a week is ideal, and they can be part of the daily vegetable mix. They are wholesome enough to feature often.
