Why

Mango is a sweet, soft tropical treat that is rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, and the vitamin A in particular is valuable for budgies, supporting healthy skin, eyes and feathers. The downside is its high sugar content, so portions stay tiny. Its smooth flesh is easy for a small beak to manage, making it a pleasant and genuinely useful occasional addition to the fruit bowl.

How to feed it

Peel away the skin and cut a small piece of the soft flesh from around the large flat stone, which should always be removed. Offer the piece in a shallow dish. Mango is very juicy and sticky, so clear away leftovers within a couple of hours to avoid mess and fouled feathers.

How much & how often

A piece about the size of your fingernail, two or three times a week, is a sensible portion. Mango is sugary, so keep it as an occasional treat rather than an everyday food.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove mango skin for budgies?

Yes, peel it. Mango skin is tough, can carry pesticide residue and contains compounds that may irritate, so offer only the soft inner flesh.

Is the mango stone dangerous for budgies?

The large flat stone is not something a budgie should peck at. It is a choking and obstruction hazard, so always cut the flesh away from it and discard the stone.

Why is mango good for a budgie's vitamin A?

Mango is naturally high in beta-carotene, which supports vitamin A levels. Vitamin A is important for a budgie's skin, eyes and immune system, so a little mango is a helpful occasional boost alongside vegetables.
