Why

Kiwi is a tangy, refreshing treat that is very high in vitamin C and also provides vitamin K, vitamin E and potassium, and many budgies enjoy the soft green flesh. It is both acidic and sugary, so it stays occasional, and the acidity means it is best given in small amounts and not too often. The tiny black seeds are harmless. Offered rarely, kiwi is a flavourful and genuinely nutritious addition.

How to feed it

Peel away the fuzzy skin, which is best removed for a budgie, and cut a small piece of the soft green flesh, seeds and all, into a shallow dish. Kiwi is very juicy, so wipe up spills and remove any uneaten fruit within a couple of hours to keep things clean.

How much & how often

A small fingernail-sized piece once or twice a week is enough. Because of the acidity and sugar, kiwi is best kept as an occasional treat rather than a frequent one.

⚕️ Please note: This is general information for budgie owners, not veterinary advice. When in doubt, leave a food out and ask a qualified avian vet. If your budgie has eaten something toxic, contact an avian vet immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can budgies eat kiwi skin?

It is best to peel it. The fuzzy brown skin is tough for a small beak and more likely to carry pesticide residue, so offer only the soft green inner flesh.

Are kiwi seeds safe for budgies?

Yes, the tiny black seeds in kiwi are harmless and can be eaten along with the flesh. They pose no cyanide risk and are far too small to be a choking hazard.

Is kiwi too acidic for budgies?

Kiwi is fairly acidic, so it can upset a tiny stomach if given often or in large amounts. A small piece now and then is usually well tolerated, but keep it infrequent and watch the droppings.
