Why sleep matters so much

Sleep-deprived birds are often grumpy, nippy and more prone to feather plucking and hormonal problems. In the wild they get long, dark, quiet nights, and pet birds do best with the same — roughly 10–12 hours, on a consistent schedule.

Setting up good sleep

Keep the sleeping area dark and quiet, away from TVs, screens and busy household traffic. A cage cover or a separate quiet sleep cage helps. Try to keep bedtime and wake time consistent, since erratic light schedules can trigger hormonal behaviour.

⚕️ Please note: Sleep needs vary a little by species and individual. Too little sleep is linked to crankiness, biting, feather plucking and hormonal behaviour, so consistent, dark, quiet nights matter.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours of sleep do budgies need?

Around 10–12 hours of dark, quiet sleep a night. Consistency matters as much as the total.

Should I cover my bird's cage at night?

Many birds sleep better covered, as it blocks light and drafts and signals bedtime. Some prefer a partial cover — see what settles your bird best, as long as the room is dark and quiet.
