Parrotlets are tiny — barely bigger than a budgie — but they have the personality and the lifespan of a much larger parrot, which surprises many first-time owners.
How long do parrotlets live?
Most parrotlets live 15 to 20 years, and with excellent care some reach around 25. That is far longer than their tiny size suggests, and much longer than a budgie, so a parrotlet is a genuine long-term companion despite fitting in the palm of your hand.
What shortens a parrotlet's life
The same preventable causes apply as for larger parrots: an all-seed diet (obesity and fatty liver disease), accidents around the home — a real risk for such a small, bold bird — and illness hidden until it is serious. Non-stick fumes and toxic foods are dangerous to a bird this small in even tiny amounts.
How to help your parrotlet live longer
Feed pellets and fresh vegetables rather than mostly seed, bird-proof the home carefully (small birds get into small spaces), allow daily exercise, and give these feisty, intelligent birds plenty of enrichment. Regular avian vet care makes a big difference. See how parrotlets compare on our parrot lifespan guide.
