Conures are lively, affectionate parrots, and they are a long-term commitment — most will be part of the family for well over a decade, and often much longer.
How long do conures live?
Most conures live 15 to 30 years, depending on the type and the care they receive. Popular green-cheek conures typically live around 15–25 years, while sun conures and jenday conures often reach 20–30 years. With excellent care, some individuals live beyond 30. Well-kept pet conures usually live longest.
What shortens a conure's life
As with most parrots, the biggest preventable killers are an all-seed diet (which leads to obesity and fatty liver disease), household accidents, and untreated illness — conures, like all birds, hide sickness until they are quite unwell. Airborne toxins such as non-stick (Teflon) fumes and scented products are another avoidable danger.
How to help your conure live longer
Feed a balanced diet of pellets and fresh vegetables rather than mostly seed, keep the home free of hazards and toxic foods, allow daily out-of-cage exercise, provide lots of enrichment for these intelligent, social birds, and find an avian vet before you need one.
