Some birds are naturally more cuddly and people-oriented than others. If you want a feathered friend that genuinely bonds with you, these are among the most affectionate species.
The most affectionate birds
- Cockatiel — gentle, cuddly and fond of head scratches; one of the friendliest for beginners.
- Budgie — social and playful, and very affectionate once hand-tamed.
- Lovebird — bonds intensely, though it needs regular handling to stay sweet.
- Parrotlet — a tiny bird that can be utterly devoted to its person.
- Cockatoo — famously affectionate and cuddly, but extremely demanding and best for experienced owners.
- Conure — playful, comical and loves attention (just be ready for the noise).
Friendliness depends on you, too
No bird is affectionate automatically. Even the friendliest species only bonds closely if it is hand-tamed, handled gently and given daily attention. A budgie left alone in a cage will stay wild, while one that is socialised every day becomes a devoted little companion. The bond you get out reflects the time you put in.
A word on cockatoos
Cockatoos are often called the most affectionate of all — but that same intense need for closeness makes them very hard to keep well. They can become loud, destructive and deeply unhappy if left alone, so their cuddliness comes with a serious commitment that suits only experienced owners.
