A healthy budgie or parrot diet

Most pet birds do best on a base of formulated pellets (roughly 60–70% of the diet), plenty of fresh vegetables and leafy greens, a little fruit as a treat, and only limited seed. An all-seed diet is too fatty and low in vitamins.

What is chop?

Chop is a big batch of finely chopped vegetables, greens, cooked grains and a little fruit that many owners make ahead and freeze in portions. It is an easy way to get variety into the daily bowl.

βš•οΈ Please note: These are general starting amounts β€” the right portion varies with the individual bird, activity and vet advice. Adjust so your bird stays a healthy weight, and remove uneaten fresh food after a few hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a budgie eat a day?

Roughly 1½–2 teaspoons of pellets plus a small daily serving of chopped veg. Budgies are tiny, so a little goes a long way β€” adjust to keep a healthy weight.

Should birds eat pellets or seed?

A pellet base with fresh vegetables is healthier than an all-seed diet. Seed is fatty and low in some vitamins, so it is best kept as a treat.
