Raisins are a popular treat for many pet birds, and they come with a common worry: aren't grapes and raisins toxic? That is true for dogs — but not for birds.
The short answer
Yes — birds can eat raisins in moderation. Raisins are simply dried grapes, and both are safe, well-loved treats for most pet birds and many wild birds too. The one thing to remember is that raisins are very sugary, so they are a treat rather than an everyday food.
Toxic to dogs, but not to birds
You may have heard that grapes and raisins are dangerous — and they genuinely are for dogs, in whom they can cause kidney failure. But that toxicity does not apply to birds. Birds have safely eaten grapes and raisins for a very long time, so there is no need to worry on that score.
How to feed raisins to your bird
Offer a small amount — one or two raisins for a medium bird, less for a tiny budgie. Because they are sticky and concentrated in sugar, they are best given occasionally. Many people soak raisins in water first to plump them up, and unsulphured, unsweetened raisins are the best choice. Check other foods on our bird food checker.
