Grapes are a firm favourite with most pet birds — sweet, juicy and easy to eat. They are safe, but because they are so sugary and often heavily sprayed, they are best kept as a treat.
The short answer
Yes — most birds can eat grapes, and many adore them. Grapes are essentially water and natural sugar, so they are safe and loved, but too many can cause loose droppings and contribute to weight gain. They are a treat, not a daily food.
Wash them well
Grapes are one of the more pesticide-heavy fruits, so give them a thorough wash, and choose organic where you can. Because a grape is large relative to a small bird, cut it in half (or into quarters for budgies) so your bird can reach the flesh easily and cannot choke on a whole one.
How much and how often
Half a grape a couple of times a week is plenty for a small bird, with a little more for larger parrots. Both green and red grapes are fine, and seedless is easiest. Balance sugary fruit like this with plenty of vegetables — see safe options on our bird food checker.
