Avocado is often called a superfood for people, but for birds it is the opposite — it is one of the most dangerous foods you can have in the house. Whether you keep a budgie, cockatiel, parrot or any other pet bird, avocado should never be offered, not even a taste.

The short answer

No — birds should never eat avocado. It contains a natural compound called persin that is toxic to birds and can cause heart failure and death, sometimes within a day of eating even a small amount. There is no safe portion, and no way to make avocado safe for a bird.

Why avocado is toxic to birds

Persin is a fatty compound found throughout the avocado plant. Humans and most mammals tolerate it, but birds are extremely sensitive to it: persin can damage the heart muscle and cause fluid to build up around the heart and lungs. Because pet birds are so small, a surprisingly tiny amount can be enough to be fatal, and it can act fast.

Every part of the avocado is dangerous

It is not just the green flesh. The skin, the pit (stone), the leaves and the flesh all contain persin, and prepared foods count too — guacamole, avocado dips, spreads and avocado toast are all off-limits. Never let a bird share your plate, sit on the counter near avocado, or forage where avocado has been prepared.

Warning signs of avocado poisoning

Symptoms can appear within 12 hours and may include a fluffed-up, weak or lethargic bird, laboured or rapid breathing, a racing or irregular heartbeat, sitting low and refusing to move, and not eating. In severe cases birds collapse and die, sometimes with little warning. Because birds hide illness and avocado can act quickly, waiting to "see how it goes" is dangerous.

What to do if your bird ate avocado

Act immediately — do not wait for symptoms and do not try to treat it at home. Remove any remaining avocado, note roughly how much was eaten, and phone an avian vet or emergency animal hospital straight away. Keep your bird warm, quiet and calm while you arrange help. Frequently asked questions

Can a small amount of avocado hurt a bird?

Yes. Because pet birds are so small and so sensitive to persin, even a small amount of avocado can be fatal. There is no amount that is known to be safe, so any avocado should be treated as an emergency.

Is guacamole bad for birds?

Yes — guacamole is made from avocado and contains persin, and it often also contains onion and garlic, which are separately toxic to birds. Never let a bird eat guacamole or any avocado-based dip.

My bird ate avocado but seems fine — what should I do?

Call an avian vet right away anyway. Avocado poisoning can take hours to show and birds hide illness well, so a bird that 'seems fine' may still be in danger. Early treatment gives the best chance.
