One of the first questions new owners ask is how long their budgie will be part of the family. The honest answer depends hugely on care.
How long do budgies live?
Most pet budgies live around 5 to 10 years, with 7–8 being typical. With excellent care, some reach 10–15 years, and a rare few go beyond. Sadly, many budgies die far younger than they should — usually from a poor diet or a preventable accident rather than old age.
Why so many budgies die young
The biggest killers are an all-seed diet (which leads to obesity, fatty liver disease and tumours), household accidents (ceiling fans, open windows, other pets), and untreated illness — because budgies hide sickness so well that owners often notice too late. Airborne toxins such as non-stick (Teflon) fumes and essential oils are also common, entirely avoidable causes.
How to help your budgie live longer
The good news is that most of what shortens a budgie's life is preventable. Feed a varied diet of pellets and fresh vegetables instead of just seed (the single biggest factor), keep the home free of bird hazards, allow daily flight and exercise, provide company and enrichment, and build a relationship with an avian vet so problems are caught early. A well-cared-for budgie has every chance of a long, full life.
