Which houseplants are safe or toxic for birds

🌱 Birds nibble and shred plants, so a houseplant only needs to be within reach to matter. If a plant isn't on this list, keep it away from your bird until you've confirmed it's safe.

Why plants matter for birds

Curious birds chew leaves, dig in soil and strip stems. Many popular houseplants β€” pothos, peace lily, dieffenbachia and others β€” contain irritants or toxins that can harm a bird even in small amounts. Keeping toxic plants out of reach (or out of the house) is the simplest safeguard.

The safest approach

Place any questionable plant where your bird truly cannot reach it, even during out-of-cage time, and offer bird-safe greens instead. Also avoid fertilisers, pesticides and glossy leaf sprays on plants your bird can touch.

βš•οΈ Please note: Plant safety can vary by species and how much a bird chews. If your bird nibbles a plant you are unsure about, remove it and ask an avian vet.

Frequently asked questions

Are pothos and philodendron safe for birds?

No. Both contain insoluble calcium oxalates that can irritate a bird's mouth and digestive tract. Keep them well out of reach.

What plants are safe for a budgie or parrot?

Spider plants, ferns, most true palms (areca, parlor, bamboo), African violets, hibiscus and many herbs are considered bird-safe. Always make sure they are pesticide-free.

Is aloe vera safe for birds?

It is best avoided. Aloe contains compounds that can upset a bird's stomach, so keep the plant out of reach.
