Conures are bright, playful, affectionate parrots that make devoted pets — but they come with one big caveat that every would-be owner needs to hear about first: the noise.
Why people love conures
Conures are playful, comical and deeply affectionate, often earning the nickname velcro birds because they love to cuddle up to their person. They are clever, entertaining and bond strongly, which makes them fantastic companions for the right owner who is home a lot.
The noise is real
The big thing to know is that conures are loud. They have piercing calls that carry a long way, and they will use them — this is completely natural, but it makes conures a poor choice for apartments or noise-sensitive households. If quiet matters to you, a conure is not the bird.
What conures need
Conures need lots of daily attention, out-of-cage time, mental stimulation and a good diet, and they live 15 to 30 years, so they are a long, hands-on commitment. Bored or lonely conures can become loud, nippy and unhappy. Given enough time and tolerance for noise, though, they are joyful pets.
